Spirituality & Suffering
A Christian, Muslim, and Jewish Trialogue on the Character of Job.”
Event Host: Dr. Sharon Betcher
November 15, 6-9 pm.
Free. No registration required.
This theological engagement on crafting a life of faithfulness through passages of suffering will read the biblical character of Job within and through a popular cultural idiom, A Serious Man, the Cohen brother’s movie of 2009. Rabbi Dr. Laura Duhan Kaplan of Or Shalom Synagogue, the Rev. Dr. Patricia Dutcher-Walls of Vancouver School of Theology, and Hanif Virani, a religious educator from the Muslim community, will introduce readings of the Job character from their diverse religious traditions and invite participants to a philosophy salon-type engagement.
Following the opening presentations, the evening takes on the tone of a philosophy salon within which members of the larger public engage in philosophical and theological reflection with the instructors and among themselves, each reflecting on the wisdom learned and the challenges of traversing suffering. Persons attending are expected to have previewed the movie, A Serious Man, prior to the event.
Location: St. Andrew’s-Wesley United – Church Lounge, SW corner of Burrard and Nelson. Pay parking available underneath Church, via lane south of church.
This evening is part of the on-going work of Iona Pacific Inter-Religious Centre.
